6/8: “Rise against Hate” Rally in New Paltz

A letter from New Paltz Women in Black:

We are very excited about the rally we are helping to organize this Saturday, June 8 from 1 PM to 2:30 PM, in front of Elting Library on Main Street, called “Rise against Hate”!

On the day of the event, a poster-making party will be held at Ryan Cronin: CronArtUSA in the Water Street Market from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. Some materials will be available, or bring your own.

rise-against-hate-FB-image.jpg
It all began when Lexy Zissu, mother of a New Paltz Middle School student, approached us with the idea. She and other parents and staff were disturbed by hateful incidents (swastika signs, the n-word) that have happened in New Paltz schools in recent months. They felt it was important for the students to see that the community was with them in denouncing hate and standing up for the rights of all students, especially those who were victims of bigotry and hate, or felt threatened by the incidents. Other schools and other marginalized and vulnerable members of our communities are also facing rising incidents of hate speech and hate crimes and they have been invited to have a voice on Saturday as well.
We really hope we will have a strong showing denouncing hate and celebrating our diversity, compassion and respect for all. There will be some amazing (but brief!) speakers and performances by the amazing TinHorn Uprising, the Resisterhood Choir and the Red Wing Blackbird Puppet Theater!
You can sign up here, Rise against Hate Rally and learn more about the event and our many great co-sponsors. The flier is also attached. We hope you can share it. If you can print it out and post that would be even better!

This is a family-friendly event that we hope will send a strong, uplifting and celebratory message of what a loving community looks like!

Hope to see you there!

Dear Friends of Women in Black,

Please join us this Saturday, March 9, as we march down Main Street for women’s rights on International Women’s Day! We are going to have the great brass band, Tin Horn Uprising, members of Resisterhood singing, rousing speakers, chants, resolve, and fun! We stand for reproductive justice, equity in the workplace, and full equality and respect for all. We stand against racism, sexism, anti-LGBTQ bigotry, and threats and discrimination against immigrants. We urge people of all genders and identities to join this action in solidarity with women’s struggles for their full human rights here in the U.S. and throughout the world,” – Lead organizer Donna Goodman of New Paltz Women in Black

The Band’s Visit

The Band’s Visit at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre
243 West 47th Street, NYC

Overview:

The Band’s Visit is the winner of 10 Tony Awards, making it one of the most Tony-winning musicals in history. In this delightfully offbeat story, set in a town that’s way off the beaten path, a band of musicians arrive lost, out of the blue. Under the spell of the desert sky, and with beautiful music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected and tantalizing ways. Even the briefest visit can stay with you forever.

“One of the most ravishing musicals you will ever be seduced by…A Broadway rarity seldom found these days outside of the canon of Stephen Sondheim: an honest-to-God musical for grown-ups…Directed by David Cromer with an inspired inventiveness that never calls attention to itself, ‘The Band’s Visit’ flows with the grave and joyful insistence of life itself…Close to perfect musically…A miraculous show.” — Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Take action today for Paycheck Fairness and Title IX

hi everyone, a few things —
1. 1/29/19 was the 10th Anniversary of the signing of the Ledbetter Act by President Obama.
2. Today, 1/30/19, the federal Paycheck Fairness Act will be reintroduced. Tweet and post about this on social media today (Wednesday) from 2 to 3PM!
Some sample tweets:
  • It’s past time for the #PaycheckFairness Act, which would help break harmful patterns of pay discrimination. The public overwhelmingly supports it and women and their families cannot afford to wait. @PowHerNY #Ledbetter10 #Equalpay
  • Ten years after President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter #FairPay Act, women are still battling the #wagegap. Tell Congress it’s past time for the #PaycheckFairness Act. #Ledbetter10 @PowHerNY #Equalpay
3. Tell the U.S. Secretary of Education: Keep Your Hands Off Title IX
You have until the end of the day today, 1/30/19, to submit a comment. Submitting a pre-written comment takes 2 clicks! Every comment counts.
