Georgia O’Keeffe (Alfred Stieglitz)
This is a thrilling one-day trip to view over 55 paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe based on her years spent at Lake George, and approximately 30 photographs by her husband, Alfred Stieglitz. They spent many summers at the Stieglitz family estate. O’Keeffe, in her correspondence from the 1920s, has described Lake George and the environs as being “perfect.” There were “perfect days of perfect quiet sunshine,” with “perfect” mountain views, “perfect” rainbows, and “perfect days” for working. O’Keeffe’s time spent there was considered the most prolific of any period in her seven decade career and this exhibit is the first to illuminate the formative influence that Lake George had on her work.
Complementing this exhibit, we’ll see A Family Album: Alfred Stieglitz and Lake George. O’Keeffe fell in love with Stieglitz, the photographer and impresario, whose family started coming to Lake George in the 1870s. Stimulated by one another, they attacked the same subjects – clouds, trees, and architecture of the family house, barns, and outbuildings. This exhibit is an intimate look at the family compound, which was the couples home until Stieglitz’s death in 1946.
The Hyde Collection, an art museum in Glens Falls, New York, is an unknown treasure! The museum is housed in a historic refurbished early 20th-century building, listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. The permanent collection from the 15th through the 20th centuries includes French and Flemish tapestries, 16th-century furniture, and decorative arts. There are paintings by Botticelli, El Greco, Rembrandt, and Tiepolo, works by important American Artists including Eakins, Homer, Ryder, and Whistler, and European masters, including Cezanne, Degas, Matisse, and Picasso.
The bus departs at 7:15 AM from the back of the former Ames in the Kingston Plaza and returns at approximately 4:30 PM. The fee covers the luxury coach, breakfast with champagne en route, entrance to the Hyde Collection and O’Keeffe exhibit with audio guide and introductory tour, dutch-treat lunch in the town of Glens Falls (we’ll give suggestions), and chilled wine, Pellegrino, and delicious sweets on the return trip.
